Position Specific Description

The Grid Control Systems Department is looking for a Control Center Engineer to join their team in Miami, FL. This position reports to a functional team within the Transmission & Substation (T&S) Grid Control Systems organization. This team is responsible for the engineering, development, application architecture, implementation, and maintenance of existing and emerging applications for the Energy Management Systems (EMS) for Transmission Operations along with other associated applications and infrastructure. These include but are not limited to, EMS system applications (GE Habitat, Configuration Control, Process Manager, PERMIT, eterraBrowser – WebFG and APF), Supervisory Control & Data Acquisition (SCADA), Alarm Processing, Open Access Gateway (OAG), Field Communication Systems (FCS), Smart Grid Technologies and Situational Awareness Displays. Development of these systems include modifying and/or de-commissioning or commissioning the associated applications, architecture, infrastructure, and communication systems and are required to comply with national/regional standards (e. g., FERC Orders, NERC Standards, etc.). Knowledge of programming languages and scripting, such as C++, Oracle, Perl, Python, etc. is desired.

This position is responsible to contribute to assigned work plans for any of the following functional responsibilities under the Transmission & Substation (T&S) Grid Control organizations:

• Hardware & Networks – responsible for the control center hardware systems and corresponding end-to-end communication networks that support the voice and data communication needs of grid control systems and infrastructure (which include systems that provide the necessary SCADA and monitoring data requirements for use by grid control operators/dispatchers),

• Systems Administration – responsible for the technical administration and configuration management of grid control computer systems; database administration of associated databases (including storage systems/networks),

• Cyber Security – responsible for the cyber security and protection of grid control systems and infrastructure,

• Change Management – responsible for coordinating project development of necessary changes to grid control. These include coordinating and securing project resources (as necessary, obtaining approvals) from other Lone Star groups as well the assessment of project risks, or

• Systems Engineering – responsible for the planning, development, application architecture, engineering, and implementation of projects with varying degrees of complexity related to grid control systems and/or Emerging Technology.

The selected candidate will be required to be on functional area callout rotation to provide 24 x 7 computer support. The person on callout rotation serves as the primary contact for operational activities related to troubleshooting, incidence response, and major operational processes within the Control Center Operations organization for a specific functional area.

Job Overview

This position applies technical abilities to specifying, designing and implementing System Control Center (SCC) changes and supports, analyzes, and enhances the on-line SCC.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Plans and performs work requiring engineering judgment in selection and substantial adaptation/modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria

  • Devises new solutions to problems encountered

  • Independently performs assignments with instruction regarding general expected results and receive technical guidance only for unusual or complex problems

  • Coordinates work with other departments to facilitate assignment completion

  • Performs advanced engineering tasks of varying complexity

  • Designs, reviews and implements technical changes that improve SCC reliability and availability

  • Participates in studies to determine the costs, benefits and impact of proposed system changes

  • Performs feasibility and functional impact studies and integration of proposed system changes

  • Investigates, develops and implements solutions to problems which impact SCC reliability

  • Reviews plans and schedules of activities to ensure the timely implementation of assigned projects

  • Assists in training less experienced personnel to perform routine tasks

  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned
