Position in this function is responsible for reporting to the Senior Associate General Counsel/Intellectual Property, this position is responsible for assisting the IP Legal team with all matters related to patent prosecution and patent portfolio management. This individual must provide high quality service to internal clients across the enterprise and provide support to internal/external counsel. This position will interface with business and legal department leaders; accordingly, the individual must be approachable, easy to work with, conduct him or herself with confidence, act as an expert in their field, and be skilled at drafting and providing clear and well-reasoned business advice to complex legal problems. This individual will provide IP support for a wide range of businesses with varying needs and requirements, they must be a self-starter, efficiently manage their time and work proactively to meet the demands of the businesses. This individual may also be asked to assist the IP Legal Team with management of the company’s other IP including trade secrets, copyrights, trademarks and other intellectual property matters.

This position is listed as a telecommuter (Remote) but applicant may choose to work from a company office if located nearby.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Work with a wide range of internal clients and internal/external attorneys to address inquiries, assess development projects, and provide guidance on patentability

  • Mentor and advise inventors on patentability and invention disclosures

  • Assist in the management of a growing docket of patent filings

  • Perform analytics on patent portfolio and create reporting

  • Assist in the development of internal IP procedures

  • Prepare correspondence and presentation materials for use with business leaders and executive patent council

  • Represent the legal team on internal patent review boards

  • Develop and maintain IP Legal educational content and assist with employee training

  • Identify and assess areas of legal risk and escalate appropriately

  • Conduct research and initial investigations related to possible infringements

Required Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor

  • Bachelor's Degree in software-related science discipline

  • Admission in the state bar where the individual resides

  • Registered to practice as a Patent Attorney with the USPTO

  • 3+ years of patent prosecution experience in a law firm or technology company

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with creating and designing presentation materials

  • Proven proactive and independent self-starter with the ability to manage, handle and prioritize multiple projects with a sense of urgency/energy and an emphasis on quality

  • Proven excellent organizational skills and a detail-oriented and deadline-focused personality

  • Proven well-developed written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree or Doctorate in software related field

  • Significant experience creating and designing presentation materials

  • Solid understanding of software related technologies and related patent eligibility standards

  • Demonstrated understanding of business problems related to assigned legal projects

  • Proven solid data analysis skills and attention to detail

  • Proven success in collaborating across a matrixed business and legal environment

  • Proven excellent presentation skills

  • Proven ability to evaluate and determine appropriate legal course of action to meet business needs

  • Proven ability to build and maintain solid working relationships with superiors, peers, subordinates, clients and outside counsel

  • Proven ability to work within a small team - sharing work and assignments as needed to ensure priority projects are handled within the appropriate timeframe

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $122,100 to $234,700 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
