JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Penn State College of Medicine, Department of Pathology and The Jake Gittlen Laboratories for Cancer Research in the Cheng Lab in Hershey, PA is looking for a reliable, organized, and motivated research technologist for a temporary position with potential for continuation.

Successful applicants will help to perform digital segmentation of data generated using x-ray tomography (microCT) in ways that require moment-to-moment interaction with Cheng lab members. The technologist will contribute towards curating and performing digital segmentation of these images, making it user-friendly, scientifically useful, attractive, and functionally polished scientific web-based resources for science and society. The applicant will learn histology while exploring the existing scope of virtual slide atlases (see www.bio-atlas.psu.edu, www.3d.fish, and www.chenglab.io) and to generate polished figures and write-ups for grants and publications. While the immediate teamwork will include with clinicians in the department of pathology, the project is central to the development of whole organism phenomics, which will impact humanity across the medical and biological science, and grant applications across the university involving medicine, basic science, and sustainability.

The duties are 100% programming under direct supervision of Drs. Cheng and Ang. The candidate will communicate daily with PIs and physicians to ensure biological and medical relevance, and with computational co-workers on the team for programming details. Strong communication skills, self-motivation and ability to work independently in a team and ability to complete assigned tasks in timely manner will be essential. Research is a strategic imperative and to increase funding from clinical departments, targeted in this case to Pathology, and is related to biomedical informatics.

This position is 40 hours per week for the summer of 2024.
